Which Should Vikki Buy.... an i-pad, or what

Now Vikki needs advise....  so one of you out there probably has more of an idea then she does.  The young heli pilot had a i-pad which she said was a computer and a phone.  She also had a kobo e-reader.  Now both these sound like a good idea to Vikki but she looked them up on the Internet and got really confused....... She does not need very many bells and whistles  .  It does not need to be the latest and greatest....

What Vikki buys needs to be really easy to use. She does not have time to study a big manual.
She would like to store her shopping list on this little hand held unit.  It shouldn't be too small or she won't be able to see the writing.
If it could be a cel phone she could use that when she is out shopping in Whitehorse and Bryan could contact her.  Her old cel phone won't charge anymore from being left unused for 10 months of the year.
If it could be a e-reader that would be handy also.  But she could get a one that is only for reading books.
We do not have a router on this satellite computer system here.  Vikki bought one but is afraid to hook it up encase it makes the whole system not work.

Any suggestions would help her a lot.

What's wrong with what you have now?
Keep life simple, stick with what you know.

I have an iPad, a Kindle, a Kindle Fire, an iPhone and more PCs that I care to count. The iPad is nice but I rarely use it after getting an iPhone. Apple devices are remarkably simple to use. Battery life is good but I'm not sure how good outside in the cold. My preference for a reader is the basic Kindle. It does not have a back lit screen which I like for reading. I find the glare on an iPad a bit too much for reading books. You could simply download the Kindle app to your PC if you wanted to read books.

Assuming you are outside of cell service most of the year I'd just buy a prepaid phone when you are in cellular service.

I also would not be afraid to add a router to your configuration. That would give you wireless and the opportunity to move around a bit. If you added wireless connectivity to your satellite hookup getting Kindle books or iPad app's would be simple. I have a staff of people that would be happy to walk you thru any technical/procedural steps. You have my email address.

Evano is right. Stay with the simple and proven. When the Americans spent millions trying to develop a pen that would write in space, the Russians just used a pencil.

great reading you guys>>>the pilot looks familiar too. I think I saw her on a heli logging show a few years back...

the routers are not too difficult to use and I agree they would add some flexibility...

on another note, what is your power system like? do you have solar back up, gen set etc--gas lamps?

Oh, and my son asked about the cats...any more pictures?

I have non of those electronic phone gadgets.

While international traveling I may buy a cell phone for convenience.

When you are a little weary and want to relax its time to listen to the wind for the wind blowing is all that anyone knows.

iPad is certainly the easiest to use and has the longest battery power. You could even hook it up to a solar charger...

Given the rugged conditions up there you should also consider buying a rugged case for it.

They wont take a dunk in the lake but will keep it from getting rain, dirt, etc on it directly.

Wireless router shouldnt be too much of a hassle. The Linksys/Cisco models have great step by step directions with them for setup. Just check with your satellite provider to make sure a wireless router is compatible with your system.

Cheers

I have to admit simple is best.
Up Taku I have starband modem hooked to a basic PC then to a wireless router that allows me to have my I-phone on and receive e-mails and text around the cabin.
you can keep the PC and wireless router hooked up at the same time and if one fail the other is a back up. you can skype on the i phone also!!!

Vikki just bought a used "i-phone" on ebay.ca that is unlocked and jailbroke...took a bit of time to find out what jailbroke meant.
