-33 for 4 days..... generator will not work
The 3000 Honda quits after 10 minutes.... so we are busy getting water out of the well and then the 10 minutes to get the internet up and running ..... and bang. we are in the dark again. The wine froze down in the crawl space. We have 4 oil lamps plus the propane Buddy Heater going. Right now we are trying to use the 5000 Honda. It was in the cabin warming up for 4 hours. We will see. This is book reading time.

Hi Vicki and Bryan
I sent an email previously about shrouding the generator to have the heat from the exhaust heat the entire generator. I did several times in the past while hunting at -40C and it worked just fine. I used a cardboard box as that is all we had at the time but one can use anything. The generators have a cut out switch for too hot or two cold. This will keep the generator real toasty, just don't let the card board touch the exhaust.
You may have received this message before as I am not up to speed on Blogging so forgive me if you get this message several times.
Good Luck

You probably know this, but unplug the little rubber hose from the Honda generator's air filter in cold weather-- otherwise crankcase pressure will build and blow the crankshaft seals -- it happened to me.
-14F here but I've managed to keep my wine warm. Hopefully you'll get a break. Not sure how big your crawl space is...I'm assuming you have minimized the space you want to keep above freezing...sort of a space within a space.
Also in the far distant past I use to get my VW running in extreme cold with a charcol fire under the engine. Not sure if your generator is cutting out because of cold air or the cold. The box idea sounds good or just confining the air intake area.
I don't have any wise words about generators and such but oh my.....frozen wine, now THAT's and emergency! LOL. Stay warm and safe.
I am feeling for you guys! We've been listening to the weather reports and know it's been -45 in Watson Lake, which means our trapline cabin will be too! Brrrr! I'm happy to be at home right now! Sending warm thoughts!
I hope something good comes from this cold weather for you, like freezing down the slush on the lake. Do you have any clear solid ice down there below the slush?
Hello from Northwestern Ontario! Great site here, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us. Thought I would let you know about a fella I know, he has a small shed at his cabin. he mounted his Honda Generator to the floor in the shed, and he has the exhaust pressed against a hole in the wall with high temp insulation sealing it. Harmful fumes are exhausted outside and the heat of the generator keeps his little shed toasty. He is using a 2000IU series generator.
freezing your wine... it's a form of alcohol abuse
