BURRRRRR

At 8:30 the generator quit.... Vikki restarted it but it only ran for 2 minutes and quit again.  She pulled the generator into the cabin.... it is on a trolley.  The cabin was way too hot but that is the only way to keep the crawl space from freezing.  Bryan reminded her to put 2 gallons of boiling water down the gray water sink and not to let small trickles of cold go down.
At 10:30 Vikki went upstairs into the cold loft but it was far too warm to sleep.
At 11:30, 2:30 and 6:30am she was down stairs adding more wood.  But the water froze at 2:30.
On the SBX this morning Bryan said he would be coming back today......
The 3000 Honda Generator still would not run properly this morning.  It was just too cold for it.
Down in the crawl space there were 3 candles, an oil lamp and a Coleman lamp all going.  Thermometer read plus 1 C.
At 2:30 this afternoon temp rose to -27 c.  and the generator would work.
Vikki was cabin bound and needed fresh air and took the dogs out for a walk.  Old Hannah got 10 feet out of the gate and set down on her rump with all four feet in the air and would not budge.  She was taken back into the cabin and only Ishi went.
Hopefully Bryan will be back soon.

Good luck in the cold over there! It is -43C here tonight with no wind.

My current thought on your crawl space, extreme cold, and the fact that hot goes up, rather than down is that you need more than just a loop of hot liquid circulating...that won't work on it's own. You need a coil of hot liquid tubing to surround a heat sink in your crawl space. I was watching someone pump diesel fuel from a tank on a pickup and thought that might work. You could hand pump a heated liquid (water w/ antifreeze)through even plastic piping but with a coil around a heat sink (the infamous bucket of rocks). Good luck.

I agree with Art. You may be able to use a hot water system using your wood stove to heat antifreee wihtin copper pipe (pex may also work) which would circulate heat to your crawl space.

The candles, an oil lamp and a Coleman lamp all seem a little precarious. Hopes this helps.

In the city I have an electric heater with a theromostat in the house so below -32 or 35C I know there will be no pipes bursting.

Vikki, please be very careful about all those lamps and candles burning down there. Without the
adequate venting of fresh air, it will be an atmosphere heavy with carbon monoxide. Absolutely deadly.

Just wanted to say hello. Its took me several weeks but I read through the blog from the start. What a great adventure you two are having. I moved from what used to be a small town and had been absorbed into suburbia to the Western End of the UP in Michigan with my kids and wife 6 years ago and love the rural life we have now. You guys make what we have look like the city though.

Keep warm up there and keep posting updates I love reading about your adventures.

p.s. I love the tundra's as well. I have an older model but they are great in the woods and so simple to work on.

You folks taking a gennie along to keep the big 4stroke Skandic alive and kicking?
Coldest I have seen one start is
-35C.
Must admit, I like the 550 fan. Old technology is still good technology.
