Mountain Goats...a hearty bunch

Look at the sunlight hitting the right of centre....then look at the grey streak just above it heading up to the top .....beleive me....because I have binoculars... there are seven Mountain goats grazing on the wind swept side of the hill, all in a row like cows behind the hay truck. (They are at the 1500 metre level but will go right up to the 1800 top..... We see this mountain from our cabin but this picture is from the other side.... Walker's Valley. Last year at this time I counted 40 Mountain Goats on Feb 6..... but it was a very heavy snow fall year. Walker's Valley had 15 feet on the ground at 600 metres by April. We never saw the big herd again. We don't know what happened.

Hi Bryan&Vikki We have wild Goats here in Scotland in the more remote parts.I bet there were some special treats cooked with all your fresh goodies.Do you always have enough firewood for the winter or do you top it up if you find some standing deadwood?:)Brian(:

Hi Brian.... we are always looking for firewood on the way back from checking traps. We never let our wood shed get any way near empty. Lots of bug kill here and also Bear kill trees. About 20 % of forest is standing dead.

Hi Ken. We hunted a Stone Sheep two summers ago and canned the meat ...it is fabulous. Mnt Goats only give you about 80 lbs and for such a Large animal we do not beleive it is worth killing for meat. Our diet is mostly Moose (from Bryan's quiding Norwegians/Danes for Guy Anttila) Bryan fished for King Salmon and I canned two, our home grown chicken...canned. Supplimented with store bought canned ham, spam, corned beef. In March, April we will ice fish for rainbow trout. In the summer we eat fresh trout twice a week. We plant a big garden and has fresh stuff all summer.

Great shot of the goats.
I know you get a lot of snow but what sort of winter temperatures do you have?

Hi Art.... I wish I could take my better camera with me out on the trail ....but it has to be small and fast. Our winters here are not that severe....we had -29 c for 3 days at NY's... and it was -20C for a few days last week but otherwise it can be -0 to -12C normal. In Feb. it can get -35C for a week. Mostly it is just winter weather. Still can work outside.
