Weather Warmer on Average of 6 degrees Cel. this Winter

Trappers are good recorders of events.  Their calenders stack up year after year on the nail beside their chair.  Each day they record the morning temperature and what snow came that day.  Looking back over many years one trapper told us all "On Sched" that the daily temperatures this winter are 6 degrees warmer than normal.
Down at the Inklin River this is really noticeable.  This River is usually frozen over by now.  It is full of crystallized ice but it is still flowing ..... in some spot 5 km an hour in faster spots 12 km. an hour.

Lots of deciduous trees down here along the River.

A Good run.

I live in Arjeplog, Sweden and we also see how the milder weather is affecting everything. We have oodles of companies coming here every winter to test cars and different components - and tis year it's really precarious. The ice on the lakes is still not safe and we have yet to see temperatures below -30C.
Keep safe, you guys - I enjoy reading about your life and I wish you all happiness in the New Year!

You are so right about the warmer weather this year. Over here in Ft. Nelson they are having a tough time putting in winter roads over the muskeg. No frost and also very little snow to mix in to build winter roads. We only have had two snowfalls. Maybe 8 inches total?? Still open bits of water on the Muskwa River here too.

Please please keep safe out there on the ice this season.

Also want to wish you both a happy new year. Hopefully see you in the summer in Atlin sometime.

I can still hear water flowing here and there along the creek and if a person looks hard enough they can find open water gently flowing below ice caverns which are now over a foot thick.

Many years ago the ice was so much thicker and the sound of the water was much more elusive. I know because I used a chainsaw and axe to find drinking water- no book learning there.

You must know to be carefull for all ice should be treated as unsafe ice.

In central MN we still have no snow. It was 52F last weekend and expected 40+ next. Monday will be colder at 16F...not sure if I remember how to dress for that. This is enough ice for fishing but no vehicles yet.

Curious: I see the traps still on your take. Why is that?

Art.... the trap frame slams tight and the animal dies quickly. In the cold weather it freezes and needs to warm up before removing. I hang the animal by the hind foot so that the stomach acid drains towards the chest cavity. I skin them as soon as they are workable. If you leave them too long they get green belly and are tainted.

Thanks Trudie, Gregg, HDT and Brian. We are very worried about ice all the time. It has our great respect. In a river if you fall in you disappear under the ice so quickly.... leaving the other person there alone. It is our greatest fear. A Lake is not as bad... at least you have a chance.
