" This was the best decision I've made all year"... Bryan said as we looked out at the rain. It is plus 4.8 Cel. and been heavily raining for 7 hours and does not look like it wants to stop. "If it had been like this yesterday I would have ____ my pants". Bryan would have been stuck on the other side of the lake... his only recourse would have been to walk around the lake or go back up to the line cabin and suffer cigarette withdrawal.

I saw the post from the fellow from Sweden. At first pass I always respond and ask if they eat meat or have leather shoes, belts or seats in their cars. Almost all of us leave a much larger imprint on the world than we should. Living as you do seems to me to be much more an adventure and a personal challenge than it is about fur. Certainly modern traps are more humane than leg traps and I've witnessed your concern and thoughtfulness on the use of snares on the wolves you've taken. Minnesota has had a huge increase in wolves and coyotes. Personally I don't mind the wolves because they keep the deer population in check. The coyotes are quite a nuisance. Over the past month I've had a porcupine eating my house and with a video-worthy effort and in deference to my wife I've tried to relocate the porcupine. This is not a relocation effort that I'd recommend and well...it was not successful. Hopefully I will find an artistic use and outlet for the quills. We could not co-exist. Actually we did co-exist for a while but finally we met face-to-face in the dark as I was retrieving some firewood for a cold night. I suspect that you, too, consider your taking of furs much distant from what this gentleman may have seen. None of us really find the seal hunts or whale hunts of significant morale character.
Hope you have a frozen lake. The smaller MN lakes north of central MN are frozen but not enough for snow machines, yet. The large lakes like Mille Lac, Leech and Lake of the Woods require much colder weather than we have been having.
I've also forgotten to mention that the photo of Bryan & the moose is wonderful. My last encounter with a moose was in the BWCA in the mid-1970's and the best place seemed to be about 20 feet up a tree.
Art, I loved your comment on moose. It really made me laugh.
That made me laugh also...
Art.... about the porcupine quills...they make beautiful art work. On a piece of leather draw the design. poke the sharp end into the leather at both ends ( the 2 " short quills work the best) and cut off the pointed end. Our First Nations do great work. It is treasured. Sorry you had to kill it but sometimes that is the only thing to do. We don't have many here because of the heavy snow area but we sometimes get Marten with quills in their months.
hello you two...
wishing you a merry christmas and a happy new year.
