Building a Walker's Valley line cabin with an Alaskan Mill Day 5

Today we started milling the logs for the walls.  They are squared on 3 sides and are 6" thick.  The bark on one face will be the exterior finish.  There is fiberglass insulation between each log and they are nailed down with 10"spikes and toenailed in with 5" spiral nails.  We are hoping it will take us 6 days to finish the walls (as it will take over 2,000 feet of lineal cutting to accomplish this).  By quitting time we had 3 logs installed.  ALASKAN MILL TIP.   You will note that in the second last pic there is a falling wedge in the cant cut and another on the other side which you can not see. These are placed in after saw has just about finished cutting.   That is so that the Alaskan mill isn't pinched and it can be pulled out from under the cant.

  1. Amazing you two. You are an inspiration!

Ok, I'm sold on the Alaskan sawmill, but how hard would it be for a woman to use it to cut similar logs?

Anyway, thank you for taking time out of eating and relaxing, and hopefully having a glass or two to keep us all up to date with the days progress.
