Chilcotin Fence to keep Grizzlies and Black Bears out

Our friends Vic and Gord and our friends the Taku Tlingit builders Phil Williams and his sons Robert and Phil Jr. and Derek Ward. They were at our cabin for supper. They had built a Wier Cabin at the west end of the lake. You can see the finished Gate and the chilcotin log fence in the background.

Last spring while the snow was still on the ground and Trapping was over, Bryan started dragging in logs to build a fence around our cabins with the Skidoo. During the summer we cleared more land and burnt the piles. It was finished by August when the Sockeye start spawning near the lake shore. August and September draw the Grizzlies, Black Bears etc around the lake because they know that the sockeye will soon be rotting on the beach. Bryan also installed an electric wire around the fence which is powered by a battery which is powered by solar. We hook up the electric wire when we are away from the cabin for days at a time. (Last year when we returned from getting winter supplies a 6 foot Black Bear had had a great time with our place. There were 26 piles of bear scat in the yard...which I picked up and put into my garden).

The Grizzlies circle the lake looking for dead salmon. Even in the day time you see them, but mostly at night.
