Bryan got back and pulled a piece of wood out of his pocket... He said "Just when you think you've seen everything in the bush, something blows your mind with it's newness.
In the middle of the night right in front of the pup tent was a piece of wood (probably a root) about 4 " long and 1 " wide. It was all crushed and the inside (not the bark or the Cambrian layer) glowed as bright as a LED. Shining like a flashlight. Bryan picked it up and he could see the skin on his hand when he held it close to himself.
Bryan thinks it must be a chemical reaction of some kind. It had been raining for days and the wood was really damp.
He placed it on the kitchen table. Last night when Vikki got up about 2 there is was glowing. Really quite remarkable. This morning we put it in a closed plastic bag. If you have a clue as to what this is let us know. There are a lot of Burls on the trees in this area. Maybe it has something to do with that.
WE ARE ALL HEADING DOWN TO CAMP ON THE INKLIN AND WORK ON TRAIL FOR THE NEXT WEEK SO YOU WILL NOT HEAR FROM US FOR AWHILE. VIKKI CONTACTED OUR PILOT FRIEND AND TOLD HIM THAT WE WOULD CONTACT HIM WHEN WE GOT BACK TO CAMP.

I love finding glowing wood! It's caused by a fungus, and I'm guessing you found it on a rotting piece of aspen or willow (probably the root) that was knocked or disturbed, making the bark come off. If you look at it in the daytime, there will be a bluish tinge to the wood.
ReplyDeleteI saw that same kind of glowing wood as a kid. It is some kind of a chemical reaction. I have only seen it in old rotted stumps that have been uprooted and very wet.
ReplyDeleteVery cool -- you almost certainly observed some bioluminescent fungi.

Never heard of such a thing, so did some searching and sure enough, Bryan and you were not seeing things. Would like to witness that myself sometime. Glad to see you guys are posting again, was having withdrawls.
I believe what you may have is what we call foxfire here in the eastern US.It's the bioluminescence created by some species of fungi present in decaying wood. Kind of a whiteish-blueish-green. When I was a kid I raked the leaves in our woods. That night, it was like a white glow-stick was busted open and sprayed on the ground.
