Wolves Howling....

First your brain registers a far off low echoing rolling in the silence of the night.  You wake up and listen...... Vikki nudges Bryan.... "What!"  "Wolves are coming" she said.  We lay there listening.  Soon the echoing became louder as they arrived in our Mountain lake valley.  You can pick up individual howls now.  This is a new wolf to us.  An undulating waver alternating between highs and lows on one second intervals.  It reminded us of a teenage boy breaking in his adult voice.  This started at 4 a.m. and we'd listen then fall asleep again.  Bryan would nudge Vikki.... "Did you hear that?"  Sometimes they come through the valley and never make a sound, but when they do ..... it's worth staying awake for.  Bryan figured it was a small pack.
We went out on skidoos that morning to see where the wolves had traveled.  We happily saw the Cow and Calf Moose safely on the lake shore.  This is the calf... it's mom is just to the left of it behind the trees.  They had gone down to the Inklin but must have made their way back here.  There were tracks of three wolves down on the far west end of the lake.  Later in the afternoon Vikki saw the three wolves on the north hill traveling east.  Bryan later came across their tracks heading down to the Inklin when he went to get the trail groomer which had been left down at the bottom of the trail.
