FREE RANGE CHICKENS

THESE ROAD ISLAND REDS HAVE A GREAT LIFE..... EACH DAY AT ABOUT 1 PM YOU CAN FIND THEM ROLLING AND ROLLING AND DIGGING AND DIGGING.  THEY ARE HILARIOUS TO WATCH.  GOES ON FOR HALF AN HOUR AT THE LEAST.  THE REST OF THE DAYLIGHT HOURS THEY JUST GO ABOUT THEIR WAY.... SOMETIMES DOWN TO THE LAKE, SOMETIMES OUT BACK IN THE BUSH.  THE ELECTRIC SOLAR FENCE DOESN'T STOP THEM.  THEY SURE KEEP THE AREA FREE OF BUGS.  EACH NIGHT AT 9 PM YOU CAN FIND THEM BACK IN THE HEN HOUSE UP ON THEIR PERCH.  WHEN WE GO OUT FOR THE THREE WEEKS THEY WILL BE LOCKED UP IN THE HEN HOUSE WHICH HAS A LARGE OUTSIDE AREA ALSO.  WE'LL PUT IN LOTS OF SAWDUST SO THAT THEY CAN STILL HAVE THEIR DAILY BATH IN THE DUST.

  2. Home your chickens survive this summer. If I remember the marten ate them last year.

Thanks for the canning update. My wife does a lot of pickles, jams, salsas, etc. Meat is another whole challenge. Your canning of meat is obviously of necessity.

It's still cold in MN. We've had lots of rain and very little warm weather. The gardening season is growing increasingly short. My honeybees are even jammed this year. Normally the dandelions are out early and gone. We s/b moving into the clover season soon but it could be late June this year. All the weather patterns seem to be shifting. We had a good sized tornado here this past weekend. I'm not sure if I'd rather deal with the grizzlies or a downbearing tornado.

    Take care.

  3. Hi Ken.... those chickens are dusting. They work the dust right down to their skin. They can stay in the dust bowls for an hour turning over and over. Just great fun to watch.
