Grizzly, Wolf, Eagle and Raven Feasting on Dead Salmon

On the barge trip back to the base cabin we watched a large Boer Grizzly and a Lone Wolf searching the shores for dieing Sockeye Salmon.  The lake had a great run of Salmon this year.  Well over 7,000 and they are still spawning now.  The shores are covered with dead Salmon.  A feast for all the predators.

This Bear scat is full of seeds and High Bush Cranberries.  It was right beside the dock.

GOING BACK TO BASE CAMP WITH MOOSE AND BERRIES

All the quarters are loaded up and the stove chimney stored away.  The door is nailed shut with a hammer over the door.  We won't be back at this Line Cabin until the snow comes and then we will be on Skidoo.
Bee and Hannah and one quarter are on Vikki's quad.  Bryan has one on his quad and the other two in trailer.

The Moose and horns, Vikki and Hannah are in the aluminum boat tied to the barge.  It was a good hunt.  We now have meat.  It is going to be good to be in camp again.  Now the canning starts.

Hunter and Gatherer.... Day 5 Moose Hunt

King Bolete Mushrooms.... great.
These Low Bush Blueberries are only 4 " high.

While Bryan is adding to the Meat Pole construction Vikki went Berry Gathering.
These are High Bush Blueberries, Currants, and a few Raspberries.

The first day we had a old Ravine come and talk to us.  After we got our Moose he returned with two others.  When we finally left the line cabin there was four more.
Now some people think of Ravines as pests but we really enjoy them.  We have only these 7 in a really large area.  Their job is to alert all the animals that something has happened and come and get some.
Ravines can live to be very old.  Something like a Parrot.
Our pilot friend Chris flew by in his 207 and gave us a wave.  Vikki had contacted him before we went on the hunt to tell him we would be up at the Line Cabin and would contact him on our return.

Bryan wanted to put the canoe into the little pond to mark Muskrat holes and so he started a paddle.

But we went over and we would have had to spend 4 hours clearing a trail to the Pond...   Next years job.
Bryan used the winch on the quad and got the canoe up in the trees.  Hopefully it will survive the snow load.

Hanging the Moose Quarters.... to keep them away from the great bear

Bryan built this meat pole last fall.  Even with the meat hanging it should be out of reach from the Grizzly and Black Bear.
We have heard stories of Grizzlies falling the large tree by chewing the tree down.

It will be steak and Mushroom tonight for sure.

With the quad Werner winch it makes it easy to hang the quarters

These are THE BEST GAME BAGS.  They can be washed over and over again .  Get the biggest size for moose.  Bought these at Cabelas.
These are NOT GOOD.  Just light cheesecloth.
These are only good for one time.

When you are wrapping the quarters the whole part has to be sealed from Blow Flies.  And even then you have to check them.  Once the maggot hatches it goes into the meat.

There has to be a tarp to keep quarters in the shade and also encase of rain.  Make sure there is room for air flow.
